METRONIDAZOLE 500

COMPOSITION :
Each tablet contains:
Metronidazole : ………………………………………………………………………..500 mg

THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES :
Metronidazole is an anti-infective in the nitro-5-imidazole class.
INDICATIONS
They are limited to infections caused by germs defined as sensitive (see pharmacodynamics):
– Amoebiasis
– Urogenital trichomoniasis
– Non-specific vaginitis
– Giardiasis
– Curative treatment of medical-surgical infections caused by sensitive anaerobic bacteria.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Absolute:
– Hypersensitivity to imidazoles.
Relative:
– Breastfeeding
– Disulfiram and alcohol: interactions.
IN CASE OF DOUBT, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO SEEK
THE ADVICE OF YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST.
WARNING AND PRECAUTION :
– Discontinue treatment in case of ataxia, dizziness, or mental confusion.
– Avoid alcoholic beverages (Antabuse effect).
– Monitor the white blood cell count in case of a history of dyscrasia or high-dose and/or
prolonged treatment.
– Metronidazole may be prescribed during pregnancy if necessary
SIDE EFFECTS
Rare; however, the following may be observed:
– Nausea, metallic taste in the mouth, anorexia, epigastric cramps, vomiting, diarrhea.
Exceptionally:
– Urticaria, vasomotor flushes, pruritus, glossitis with a sensation of dry mouth.
– Headaches, dizziness, mental confusion, seizures.
DOSAGE
Amoebiasis:
– Adult: 1.5g per day, in 3 doses.
– Child: 30 to 40mg/kg/day, in 3 doses.
Trichomoniasis:
– Women (urethritis and vaginitis due to Trichomonas): 250mg tablet. Preferably, use a 10-day
combination treatment consisting of 500mg per day orally in two doses and 1 suppository per
day.
– Men (urethritis due to Trichomonas): 500mg orally in two doses for 10 days.
Giardiasis:
– Adult: 750mg to 1g per day for 5 consecutive days.
– Child:
2 to 5 years: 250mg/day (250mg tablet)
5 to 10 years: 375mg/day (250mg tablet)
10 to 15 years: 500mg/day
Non-specific vaginitis:
– 500mg, twice a day for 7 days.
Treatment of anaerobic bacterial infections:
– Adult: 1 to 1.5g/day
– Child: 20 to 30mg/kg/day.
CONSERVATION
– Store at a temperature below 30°C, away from light and moisture.
– Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
– Do not use after the expiration date on the box.
